Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College was established in 1953 as a community college on the campus of what was then West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University). In 2003, it was accredited as West Virginia State Community and Technical College but remained administratively linked to WVSU. In 2008, the legislature fully separated the Community and Technical College from its parent 4-year institution. However, both schools continue to share the same campus. However, efforts are underway to establish a new, separate campus to facilitate KVCTC's mission and remedy the extremely crowded conditions endured by both KVCTC and WVSU. The new location of the campus is where the former DOW research facility is located in South Charleston, WV and will open as the new campus for KVCTC beginning with the fall 2012 semester
In 2009, the school went through a name change to distinguish itself from West Virginia State University. The school's new name was officially announced on April 20, 2009 as Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College. [2]
KVCTC held its first commencement ceremony on May 16, 2009. Previously, Kanawha Valley held its commencement in a joint ceremony with West Virginia State.[3]
Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College grants twenty-three Associate in Applied Science Degrees, two Associate in Science Degrees, one Associate in Arts Degree, twelve Certificate Degree Programs, and eleven Skill Sets. To meet the expressed need for nurses in the region, KVCTC, at the time WVSCTC, began its first Associate Degree in Nursing in the fall of 2005. Many of the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees transfer to baccalaureate degree programs at WVSU and other colleges and universities throughout the state and the region.[4]
Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College has met the recommended criteria to become an independently accredited institution by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In October 2004, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association approved KVCTC, at the time WVSCTC, to receive the maximum five-year initial accreditation.
The athletic teams, known as the Yellow Jackets, compete in the NCAA's Division II as a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Even though WVSU and KVCTC are separate colleges, students from both schools compete on the same athletics teams and when the teams play, only WVSU is recognized as the school the teams are from.
Due to WVSU and KVCTC sharing the same campus, students from both schools can participate in the Marching Band, Wind Ensembles, and Choir offered. However, the Marching Band, Wind Ensembles, and Choir are only recognized as WVSU.
Instrumental groups at WVSU/KVCTC include the Marching Band, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Jazz Band, the Guitar Ensemble, the Percussion Ensemble, the Brass Choir, and the Woodwind Ensemble.
In addition to the instrumental groups, there is also the Choir. There are currently two vocal groups, the WVSU Choir and the State Singers which is a group of singers that has a required audition. Other vocal groups are in the process of being formed at WVSU/KVCTC.
